Default Changing the resolution of an LCD screen

My laptop has an LCD screen with a native resolution of 1440x900.

When I start a second X server with a resolution of 1024x768, the image is stretched to fill all the screen, but I'd like it to stay at 1024x768 but be centered on the screen.

I tried the GPU scaling options in nvidia-settings, but it didn't change anything.

My card is a GeForce 7600, drivers are 100.14.11.

Thanks for any hint.
