Default Geforce FX 5500 with GNU/Linux quake4-demo artifacts

I'm running a Geforce FX 5500 with the latest nvidia driver and using the idsoftware quake4-demo on an Ubuntu based GNU/Linux system, with the following problem: within a minute or two of playing, the screen tends to freeze completely for about 5 to 10 seconds, and sometimes up to 30 seconds. In other occasions while playing, the screen blanks out completely while the audio and game play is otherwise still active; and finally, sometimes the blending or highlight textures are visible only and the rest of the textures in the game are darkened out. For that last one, its almost as if the blending stage of the game isn't functioning properly, and in all cases, it seems the OpenGL pipeline is being interrupted.

One thing I tried to do is open an ssh connection to the box while these freezes/artifacts take place. I'm able to run top, and dmesg, and the system is fairly usable through the shell, remotely, even during these bizarre occurances.

This set of hardware has worked flawlessly for me before. I'm thinking the only set of changes that might have taken place is installing all the latest Ubuntu updates that come through its update service. For this log report, I'm also running the latest 2.6.22-git4 kernel. I might consider rebooting to an Ubuntu Live CD to see whether the game runs properly again. Do the above symptoms suggest the card has gone bad?

Does setting NvAGP to 0 in xorg.conf help?

Have you verified that you're using the latest motherboard BIOS?

I've added Option "NvAGP" "0" and still the problems continue. I agree thats a good option to keep in, and now I've even booted the system with agp=off for good measure.

The motherboard is a Giga-byte 7DPXDW-P and I've confirmed the BIOS has been at the latest, known as version F6. Its been that way since 2005 and it seems unlikely they will publish any more updates.

Currently I'm booted as a single CPU (no SMP), using Server instead of low-latency desktop scheduling, and turned off power management features. I might have to pull out more cards next like sound, and usb, to eliminate potential problems further though a preliminary test with nousb on the kernel line hasn't helped.

My motherboard temperatures lately, under SpeedFan on Windows show a local temperature of around 50 or 55C, and a remote temperature of a whopping 59C. Now the motherboard temps are hotter than the CPUs!

Installing lm-sensors on Ubuntu I see the ``sensors'' command giving what I believe are corresponding values of 57C and 66C for the SMBus AMD768 adapter.

Maybe its time to swap out the motherboard.

I've also noticed that basic OpenGL programs such as glxgears, and my own program, and other small ones that you can find with a websearch with names quark, cubes, stars work fine.

Its the more advanced programs like quake4-demo, openarena, and neverball which cause problems. I've pasted part of a neverball strace below, where it stalls.

Also, when leaving glxgears running and then launching one of the problematic full featured programs, although they both suffer the expected slowdown they at least run together with much greater stability compared to the problematic program running full bore on its own.

For the strace, you can see the read/poll is caught up on descriptor 4. So I went into the /prod/pid/fd directory for the neverball process to see that fd 4 points to ``4 -> socket:[50601]'', a unix domain socket. fd 6 corresponds to /dev/nvidiactl, and fd 7 to /dev/nvidia0. I ran ``netstat -n | grep 50601'' and it just shows STREAM CONNECTED. I'm not sure if this fd 4 ultimately refers to an nvidia /dev descriptor that communicates with the nvidia kernel module, or if the neverball application is talking to its subprocess/thread, which pstree shows as having one. The strace shows how the stall on the poll call happens just after the nvidia fd 6 and fd 7 descriptors have done some work, possibly writing the video frame.
