Default NVreg_RegistryDwords="PerfLevelSrc=0x2222" What Does it do?

I have found several posts in reference to this, I also have tried booting with this to try to improve stability and it seems to have made a bit of difference, What exactly does this do?

I don't know what it's meant to do but, one of the side effects on laptops (or at least my laptop) is that it prevents the GPU from clocking itself down into "standby" mode. This drastically increases the responsiveness of a 3D desktop but can cause the GPU to get extremely warm even while idle.
