lots of people argue the next card isnt worth the upgrade...

same thing has happened with previous generations.

people bitched about FSAA with the V5, saying it wasnt needed and that higher resolution makes it look better anyway.

look at us now. running at 1600X1200 WITH FSAA.

DualHead wasnt a option or even needed until the GF4 came out, yet Matrox had it first.

Yes, you woulda spent 300-400$ for a GF4, 100-250$ for an Ati 8500.

Is it worth upgrading from those to the 9700?

not if you play at 1024X768 or 1280X1024 with little to none AA or AF.

Me, I loaded up Aquanox last night at 1600X1200 6X AA and 16AF and STILL got 25fps. (playable? yes, but runs smoother at 1600X1200 @ 4xAA and 16xAF)

even 1024X768 @ 6xAA and 16xAF gave me 80fps. more than playable and it looked so so pretty.

You cannot make games faster if they are CPU dependent, what you can do is improve the image.

Isnt that what nVidia says the nv30 is about? better pixels versus faster pixels?

I got my the other day. No major issues. Runs all the games I have max settings (16x12x32 x16 AF) at 90+ fps. Have not had a chance to really test x4 FSAA. But so far it can give me frame rates and settings that my GF4 Ti4200 nor my 8500 could do.

A couple minor issues. Taking a SS in Q3 with x4 AA gets croruppted (image on screen is fine, tga save in your hdd is wacked). And I could not get the High res textrues to work in UT.

I have a desire to be loved, but I doubt ATI can fill that need.

I might believe if the many of the features of the Athlon XP 2200+ were broken in the drivers...

Ooh, cheap shot there. You're right of course, with all the reviews listing the numerous broken features of the 9700, it's a complete mystery why demand for it is greater than anyone's expectation.

I currently have a Ti4600 and was actually thinking of upgrading to the R9700.

The reviews were great and drivers were supposed to be vastly improved over their last card release and the benchmarks were awesome as it stomped everything in sight.

The only remaining issue for me was compatibility and stability and I'm not about to trust a few website reviews all using the same five or six programs to tell me that story. I was waiting for actual users of the R9700 to respond.

Well the cards are out and the responses are coming in, and once again it is the same old story. Game after game, problem after problem over and over.

Problems with lockups, games that won't run, and more hardware compatibility problems than you can shake a stick at.

Why won't my computer boot up right with the R9700?? Oh, I need a bigger power supply and or a new motherboard.

Want to buy an 8x AGP motherboard for your shiny new video card??? Guess what they don't work with the R9700.

Having problems with your drivers??? Well you obviously need to totally reformat your hard disk and reinstall your OS. Then maybe, just maybe the R9700 will work right.

Um, no. I've never in my entire life had to do a complete reinstall for a videocard. NEVER!!!

Yep, 13000 3dmarks and 16xaniso and 6xFSAA are awesome, when and if they work.

Sorry, I'll take 10000 3dmarks, 4xFSAA and 4X aniso that WORKS ALL THE TIME!!!!!!

Can't wait to see that bug list grow exponentially when DX9 is released.

Damn, and to think I actually had one on order. I'm so glad that Gamestop cancelled my order. I get a nice little coupon from them to use on something else and I have been saved countless hours of aggravation and installing beta drivers whenever a new game is released. Thank you Gamestop!!

Sorry, but I'm not about to spend $400 to beta test a video card.

To those of you that actually have one running.... Congratulations!!! You've passed the first of many tests in the R9700 beta test.

Oh and before you start flaming me for all this obvious nvidiot propaganda I'm spewing, go and have a look over at the mess over at Rage3d. hmmm The name now seems strangely appropriate since everyone seems to be in a rage about all their problems.

Once again, perhaps it wouldn't hurt to remind you that Rage3d is the board for ATI related discussion, bug reporting, and problem solving.

NVIDIA users have half a dozen forums to spread the problems over, and there are plenty of those as well. Sure, the 9700 has some issues... all cards do initially. If you think otherwise, that's your perogative.
