Default Problem with the SLUB allocator?

X won't start when the new SLUB allocator of linux 2.6.22 is used - "caught signal 11". Is this a known problem?

No, this is not a known problem. How did you determine that the SLUB allocator was the problem?

Also, please generate and attach an nvidia-bug-report.log.

I am not 100% certain the allocator is the problem, but it's the only thing I've changed in the configuration since 2.6.21. I guess it could be some other change in 2.6.22 that I did not cause by changing the configuration. Also, the Debian stock kernel for 2.6.22 (2.6.22-1-k7) works just fine. There are a lot of differences between that kernel and mine, though, SLAB versus SLUB being just one of them.

I'll be happy to investigate further if you tell me how, but I'm going away tomorrow and won't be back for two weeks so it may take a while.

I'd be curious whether this problem exists with any other X driver besides the nvidia.

Have you tested with your own 2.6.22 kernel that has the same configuration as in the past?

By the way, the nvidia-bug-report.log mentions nvidiafb. I loaded that module manually, after the problems, to do some experimentation. It is not responsible.

The nv driver works just fine.

I'll try that, tonight if I have time or in two weeks.

I don't think it's related to slub. I use the 2.6.22.1 kernel since the 1st day it was available. I didn't have any problem. I use Debian SID, on a tri-screens setup.
Some days ago, there was a packages update on Debian SID, which included some glib and other C++ stuff packages.
When I reboot, I immediately get the "Caught signal 11. Server aborting" problem. I use the vesa driver for now, and that really sucks (no tri-screens).

BTW, I also notice there's a lot of programs which now do not work anymore (segmentation fault). Like mplayer, aterm (!!!), and so on.
It's a real mess !

yes debuser, I have the same xorg crash!
Check my post!
I am also quite sure it is related to the glibc updates of a few days ago, but nobody in the #debian irc channel seems to know anything about it...

Now that you mention it, the udev update came at the same time as I installed 2.6.22. I guess I stared too much at SLUB since it's supposed to expose hidden bugs. Thanks for the comments, I hope the udev problem is resolved soon.
