Default weird blue spots appearing

I've been using the nvidia proprietary drivers for a few years now, without any major problems, but recently the driver has decided to add blue spots everywhere

Here is a screenshot of the problem :
http://pix.nofrag.com/f1/30/4cf47c4d...29d27263e.jpeg
it should look like this :
http://pix.nofrag.com/77/ea/17e8df6e...9fbeb179b.jpeg

I obtained the second screenshot by moving a window over the blue spots, which kinda erased them (!?)

I use a kernel 2.6.22.1 and nvidia drivers 100.14.11, amd64 and gf6600gt pci-e
The spots don't appear with the open source nv driver nor in the framebuffer

So, is my card fried or is it just the driver ?

Did you check you color depth settings (maybe the installation has reset them to some conservative value)? The effect looks like some simple dithering stuff (which is commonly used at low color depths).

No, the depth is 24 bits as usual and there is no dithering

I just tried a live cd and the bug is also there

I am guessing that is Celestia screenshot there - if so, in the Celestia menu |Options->OpenGL Render Path->, change the OpenGL renderer.

Absolutly not, it's just my background (generated by xplanet, no opengl involved)
And the spots also appear on audacious, gkrellm, emacs, firefox, mplayer, games, etc ...
