Default back screen/no sound enabling nvidia driver for 6600 AGP

I originally posted this question on ubuntu forums but haven't got a response.
Hopefully someone hear can spare a few minutes and give me some suggestions on what to try next..

I am new to Linux but having trying to glean possible solutions from various forum posts without much success. When enabling the nvidia native driver I get a black screen/with no sound (drums) when Ubunto tries to startx. I have tried a couple of other distro's, PCLOS and LiveCD for Sabayan with similar results.

What I have tried:
- Installing driver via restricted driver manager. envy script or following instructions at nvidia.com...same result each time

- Installing via Envy
- Installing using instructions at nvidia.com

I went back to scratch, re-installed Fiesty Fawn and enabled nvidia driver in restricted driver manager. Then based on what I could find in other similar posts I have tried the following..

Cleaned up Xorg.conf
Section "ServerLayout"

Tried adding Option "NvAGP" to the device section and explicity enabling and disabling it.

Also tried tweaking various AGP settings in BIOS including
setting AGP Mode 8X and 4X
AGP Fast Write Enabled and Disabled
AGP aperature size 128M and 64M

I've attached Xorg.0.log from one of the failed boot.

I don't know if this is relevant or not by I see this line in the log file which looks odd considering it is an AGP card...

(II) NVIDIA(0): NVIDIA GPU GeForce Go 6600 GT at PCI:1:0:0 (GPU-0)
(--) NVIDIA(0): Memory: 262144 kBytes
(--) NVIDIA(0): VideoBIOS:
(II) NVIDIA(0): Detected PCI Express Link width: 8X
My motherboard is an Asus P4V800D-X with AGP and PCI Express slots
Primary graphics adapter is set in BIOS as AGP
Bios is the latest available.

I would really appreciate if anyone can offer a solution or any advise on what I can try looking at next..
