Try what is mentioned by nVidia in the sticky posts and then what remonman said here: http://www.nvnews.net/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=95804

If this doesn't work, you have the same problem as we have (in this case welcome in the group )

abubhz,
Compositing is not supported on your GPU (or any supported only in 1.0-71xx).

Please retest with the Composite extension disabled in xorg.conf.

thanks,
Lonni

abubhz,
How can this problem be reproduced?

Also, please generate and attach an updated bug report.

Those symptoms sound like a much deeper problem than an X driver issue. Do these problem persist if you switch to using the 'nv' or 'vesa' X drivers?

There's nothing in the nvidia driver that would have any impact on installing packages (RPMs, DEBs, etc). Its quite possible that you're hitting multiple problems which all trigger a hang.

Have you tried disabling renderaccel?

It is complicated, what I can see is: these problems only happen in use of driver NVIDIA. When i was using the version ubuntu 6,06, I did not have any type of problem with this. However, when I did upgrade to the recent versions i couldnt even use the acceleration 3D. With this last release of NVIDIA's driver, finally it was possible to install and to use the acceleration 3d normally, however I have some collateral effects in my machine. The funny is, the drivers of NVIDIA have no influence on these problems.
