Default Fedora 7 NVIDIA-Linux-x86_64-100.14.11 lockup

Hi,

This is the second time since buying an Albatron 8600GT card I have tried to install the Nvidia driver.

The Fedora supplied nv driver works fantastic but has no 3d acceleration.

After installing NVIDIA-Linux-x86_64-100.14.11-pkg2.run (compiled driver to my kernel) when X starts the GFX fan drops in speed and my system locks up solid with flashing caps and scroll lock leds. Only a hardware reset will (or power button) restart the computer. No ssh access while it is locked.

I have searched this forum and have not found any working solutions for me.

The Xorg.log file doesn't show anything going wrong that would cause this problem.

I have attached a few log files and the nvidia-bug-report.log but that can only be run while using the nv driver.

Thanks for any help.

This sounds like a kernel Oops and/or panic. Have you verified that you're using the latest motherboard BIOS?

Yep, updated to the latest motherboard bios before installing the driver. I even tried the original bios as well to see if it makes any difference.

Do you have the means to capture the BUG()/Oops message (e.g. via a serial (see ../Documentation/serial-console.txt in the kernel source tree) or netconsole (see ../Documentation/networking/netconsole.txt))?

If it helps at all Bubba, I have a passive 8600GT from Gigabyte using the same driver under Fedora Core 7 and am not having issues.

Ok, I got netconsole and syslogd logging to my router and I was able to catch the panic. It has something to do with the interrupt handler by the looks of it.

I have attached the kernel panic log and the xorg log with verbose output, hope it helps..

Thanks, I'll take a closer look. It looks like there're two different problems, one leading to the Xids and another leading to the kernel panic. Which VBIOS release is installed on your graphics card?

Video BIOS is: 60.84.35.00.11

I forgot to mention the card works perfect in windows (xp pro) using forceware version: 158.22

Thanks.

You have X2 CPU and SMP kernel ? Try "maxcpus=1" kernel option, and check stability. Did this help ?

Not SMP, only a single CPU.

I wish it was that simple.
