I have the same problem on my 7600 Go and I am using
Code:
options nvidia NVreg_RegistryDwords="PerfLevelSrc=0x2222"
to prevent it from happening (works fine).
while my 7800 GTX works fine without this option.

Any other option to toy with to get that fixed?
I tried perflevelsrc, softedids and mobile all combined. Is there a way to find out what Dell uses in the Windows drivers?

I can't believe such a card wouldn't work properly. After all it's what Dell offers as high performance card for all its 9400 Inspiron series, but I don't have Windows installed on that laptop.

I suppose one can use them through NVreg_RegistryDwords, but how do you pass several arguments? With a coma between them? I'm willing to try and post the results here but this will take some time.

Exclamation Re: GeForce Go 7900 GS black flash screen

3 bug reports from my end i cant find a way to replicate the problems... at the moment but maya was running on all 3 computers that i got these reports from.

one of our boxes it turned out we had an old plugin loading which once removed stopped the Xid errors on one, but ive checked these 3 ive attached for this same problem no luck.

Ok, when the flashing thing happens I think I get the following:

Code:
[57712.021380] NVRM: Xid (0001:00): 6, PE0000 033c 00000001 0000fdfc ffffffff ffffffff
[57712.038732] NVRM: Xid (0001:00): 30,  L1 -> L0

So I fixed the flickering by clicking on "Force Full GPU Scaling" in the preferences, then it worked fine again for a few hours, then started again.

Code:
[110427.372121] NVRM: Xid (0001:00): 6, PE0000 0200 07800000 0000fdc8 00ffffff 00000000
[110427.389366] NVRM: Xid (0001:00): 30,  L1 -> L0
I post this as the Xid is slightly different. Hopefully this helps.

And finally a deadly Xid. That is, once this happened, the whole screen is locked and only the mouse can be moved, all the rest is dead. I managed to restore the system by logging in from the network then killing X11. Here's the Xid:

Code:
[146849.637279] NVRM: Xid (0001:00): 6, PE0000 0374 00000000 0000fdcc ff3b5998 00000001
[146849.654601] NVRM: Xid (0001:00): 30,  L1 -> L0
That's it. Hopefully that can help the nvidia engineers. I'm available if you need some more testing.

+1

As a workaround, adding the following to the following "I have no clue what it does" module option
Code:
NVreg_RegistryDwords="PerfLevelSrc=0x2222"
fix the issue...

Wonderful world of closed source driver....

BTW, does that option show up in /proc/driver/nvidia/registry on your setup? It never seemed to do any difference in my configuration.

Nope, but since this is some kind of undocumented options... so I don't even bother to worry about this...

the full list of options I use (most devices things are Gentoo...) on my inspiron 9400:
Code:
options nvidia NVreg_DeviceFileMode=432 NVreg_DeviceFileUID=0 NVreg_DeviceFileGID=27 NVreg_ModifyDeviceFiles=1 NVreg_SoftEDIDs=0 NVreg_Mobile=1 NVreg_RegistryDwords="PerfLevelSrc=0x2222"
With this, I stop getting the xid errors and the black flash...
I case of interest, I attach a bug report so you can actually check to see possible config difference between your config and mine :-)
So at least it may be useful to someone...
