Unhappy Ubuntu - Nvidia driver with dvi monitor distorted

I just installed Ubuntu Feisty fawn. Default VESA nv driver worked fine at installation. I've done apt-get update and apt-get upgrade. I installed my nVidia driver using envy 0.9.7-0ubuntu8. It appears that the nVidia driver is running now, but looks like there is a communication error with the DVI monitor. The monitor displays a double image of the desktop with some lines on the right side, see attached picture. When I run nvidia-settings it shows the resolution as 800x600, but from xorg.conf I would expect it to be 1024x768. nvidia-settings will not let me select a different resolution. I tried running 'dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg' to set the possible resolutions, but no change.

System:
Pentium 4
nVidia GeForce4 Ti 4200
DVI monitor (IBM T85D)

Which sticky post are you referring to? Are you asking me to attach nvidia-installer.log?

I doubled checked, the following packages were installed:
make, gcc, linux-headers, pkg-config, and xserver-xorg-dev

I uninstalled the following packages with the --purge option:
nvidia-glx, linux-restricted-modules, and linux-restricted-modules-common

I removed this file:
/etc/init.d/nvidia-kernel

After this:
1. I changed back to my original xorg.conf
2. Rebooted
3. Downloaded NVIDIA-Linux-x86-1.0-9639-pkg1.run from http://www.nvidia.com/object/linux_d..._1.0-9639.html
4. Exited GDM (sudo /etc/init.d/gdm stop)
5. sudo sh NVIDIA-Linux-x86-1.0-9639-pkg1.run
6. Now, I have a nvidia-installer.log (see attachment)

I still have the same problem...

I need to see a bug report, generated per the instructions in the sticky posts. The driver installer log will not tell me anything about why X isn't doing what you expect it to do.

The problem is that the EDID in your DFP is returning bogus data. You'll need to set UseEDID to false in xorg.conf.

It still looks the same...

Borrowed HorizSync and VertRefresh numbers from http://www.mail-archive.com/linux-x@.../msg02641.html

From Xorg.0.log (also attached):
(WW) NVIDIA(0): No valid modes for "1280x1024"; removing.

My xorg.conf looks like this now:
Section "Monitor"
Identifier "Generic Monitor"
# HorizSync 28.0 - 51.0
HorizSync 64
# VertRefresh 43.0 - 60.0
VertRefresh 60
Option "DPMS"
EndSection

Section "Device"
Identifier "nVidia Corporation NV25 [GeForce4 Ti 4200]"
Driver "nvidia"
Option "UseEDID" "False"
EndSection

Section "Screen"
Identifier "Default Screen"
Device "nVidia Corporation NV25 [GeForce4 Ti 4200]"
Monitor "Generic Monitor"
DefaultDepth 24
SubSection "Display"
Depth 24
Modes "1280x1024"
EndSubSection
EndSection

(II) NVIDIA(0): Validating Mode "1024x768":
(II) NVIDIA(0): 1024 x 768 @ 60 Hz
(II) NVIDIA(0): Mode Source: X Server
(II) NVIDIA(0): Pixel Clock : 65.00 MHz
(II) NVIDIA(0): HRes, HSyncStart : 1024, 1048
(II) NVIDIA(0): HSyncEnd, HTotal : 1184, 1344
(II) NVIDIA(0): VRes, VSyncStart : 768, 771
(II) NVIDIA(0): VSyncEnd, VTotal : 777, 806
(II) NVIDIA(0): H/V Polarity : -/-
(WW) NVIDIA(0): Mode is rejected: HorizSync (48.4 kHz) out of range
(WW) NVIDIA(0): (64.000 kHz).

You need to adjust the HorizSync that you specified. See the X log for how other modes were validated.

I think I'm closer, the distorted image on the monitor is different now. Here's another bug report.

I would expect my monitor to display 1024 x 768 @ 60 Hz, any way to specify the native resolution?

(WW) NVIDIA(0): Mode is rejected: Mode (1024 x 768) is too large for DFP
(WW) NVIDIA(0): Native Resolution (Max: 640 x 480).
