Default Stability problems in OpenGL with 100.14.11

My problem seems similiar to what others with 7600GS and A8R32-MVP motherboards mention; Screen goes into standby due to lost signal, and the computer stops responding. It happens more often when using 3D applications, but can freeze while in 2D too. When frozen, it is hard frozen - doesn't respond to ping or magic SysRq key. In fact, it doesn't seem to have time to write anything in the system logs (that I have found at least). It's that sudden.

Details:
* 7600GS
* ASUS A8R32-MVP Deluxe
* Fedora 7 2.6.22.4-65.fc7 (currently)
* Driver version 100.14.11 (currently)
* Freezes only occur when the nvidia driver is enabled. Machine is solid when the 'nv' driver is used instead.
* Freezes are HARD - (magic SysRq-key doesn't work), and no log entries are generated insofar as I can tell.
* Freezes occur more often when using 3D functions, therefore I have disabled Compiz/Beryl
* Freezes occur when in 2D too, for instance while scrolling web pages in firefox, or when playing gweled.
* Card temp is not the issue (Tested it while running a lot hotter in XP)
* Machine is rock solid when using Windows XP.

I checked against, and tried the suff in the sticky posts in this forum; http://www.nvnews.net/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=58498
* dmesg is already reporting 'PCI:'Not using MMCONFIG'
* tried 'idle=poll'.
* motherboard is at latest BIOS (0701).
* Tried 'maxcpus=1'.
* Tried 'elevator=as' as per billydv:s suggestion here
* Tried with and without overclocking the CPU - no difference. (plus it's stable in XP anyway)
* Tried numerous kernels (FC6 as well as several versions of Fedora 7)
* Tried numerous driver versions (recompiled for each kernel version)
* Latest try was the driver patch mentioned by zander here. Still freezes

Easiest way to trigger a freeze is to start up Warcraft III. It usually freezes in under 2 minutes.

Since the machine hard-freezes, I obviously can't run 'nvidia-bug-report.sh' after the bug has occurred. I have included a report generated while running normally in the hopes that it contains some useful info anyway.

Thanks for any suggestions. Will happily provide more info.

Same issue here- MSI K8N Neo4 Platinum MB, with the 7600GS.

Using the nvidia X driver it crashes back to text mode as it tries to load Gnome. Using the nv driver it is fine, until the internal MythTV video player tries to fire off, where it goes blank and locks with 99% X usage. Mplayer and Xine work fine with the nv driver.

Linux mythtv 2.6.22.4-65.fc7 #1 SMP Tue Aug 21 22:36:56 EDT 2007 i686 athlon i386 GNU/Linux

nvidia-graphics100.14.11-libs.i386 1:100.14.11-91.fc7 installed
nvidia-x11-drv.i386 100.14.11-1.fc7 installed
nvidia-graphics-helpers.i386 0.0.21-22.fc7 installed
nvidia-graphics9755-libs.i386 1:1.0_9755-87.fc7 installed
nvidia-graphics-devices.noarch 1.0-5.fc7 installed

I'm about to downgrade to what worked before. Good luck-

Zeph

My mistake- This symptom is what I'm seeing though:
"Screen goes into standby due to lost signal, and the computer stops responding."

SSH sessions close, non responsive to any keyboard input, etc.

I seem to have the same 100.14.11 symptoms, also with a 7600GS but my motherboard is a MSI K8T Neo2. I have managed to use OpenGL apps for a while before crashing, but right now, they just crash immediately upon starting. It's sometimes just the X server that crashes and sometimes the whole machine becomes unresponsive like it's described in the original post. It also happens sometimes without using GL, even while it's "idle". I can see no clues to what happened in the logs.

It seems either the patch here helped after all - (but in that case required a cold boot), or that one of the latest updates to Fedora 7 solved the problem. Either way, it seems to be stable now. Played Warcraft III for a few hours without any problems.

Close this thread now. I'll open a new one if it becomes unstable again (possibly linking to this thread if it is the same symptoms).

More details here: livna.org

Code:
# yum remove nvidia-x11-drv
# yum install kmod-nvidia
Seams to have fixed my video issues for now- for the first time the nvidia xorg driver is running.
