Default Blank screen: GeForce4 420 Go in Toshiba under SUSE 10.2

I followed SUSE's step-by-step instructions on installing the kernel modules for my legacy card, but still get a blank screen! I went through posted xorg.conf-s, read FAQs but still no joy.

If I replace "nvidia" with "nv", I can get into X, but strangely enough, the modes must be screwed up b/c I get what seems to be a widescreen format on my little laptop LCD (a rectangle sandwitched between two black bands)

I ran out of ideas. Any help would be appreciated.

Here are the relevant files:
/var/log/Xorg.0.log - http://pastebin.ca/672964
/etc/X11/xorg.conf - http://pastebin.ca/672970
lspci, lsmod - http://pastebin.ca/672972

Also, if your setup is similar, could you kindly post your xorg.conf?
I have a Toshiba Satellite 2410

Thank you.

Try adding:
Option "UseDisplayDevice" "DFP"

awesome, it worked! I can now startx with nvidia.

2 problems:
  1. everything is terribly slow - glxgears gives around 50fps. is there a fix for this? This is the most pressing problem.
  2. there is a black band on the right side of the screen. I always got this band with every linux distro on my notebook as soon as I installed the nVidia driver. is there a fix for this?

I found these posts:
  1. http://www.nvnews.net/vbulletin/show...black+band+420 and will try the second xorg.conf.txt and
  2. http://www.nvnews.net/vbulletin/show...black+band+420
They seem quite different and there are several xorg.conf versions. Which one should I try?

glxgears is not a benchmark. What else is slow, and how can it be measured?

Also, see the forum sticky posts.

I know glxgears is not reliable, but I don't know what else to use.

It takes 3-4 minutes to fully login (the time from hitting enter after entering password and until the background is displayed). When entering a command that involves the GUI, the cursor changes to indicate system busy for about a minute.

I haven't tried much else as the system is simply not usable.

Although this is the least of my problems, I'd appreciate some guidance re: black band on the right, as there seem to be several solutions and some may make everything worse.

I don't have one of these notebooks here, so I can't speak beyond what you've already found as potential solutions. You've got nothing to lose by trying them.

As for the performance issue, you need to determine what is causing the problem. There are potentially many different things that could cause poor performance that have no relationship to the X driver being used.

I can't comment further until you follow the instructions in the forum sticky posts.
