Default 8400M G on laptop - possible solution and possible regression

I have an Asus F3Sc laptop, which comes with a GeForce 8400M G, and have had a bit of problem getting the nVidia drivers working.

I downloaded and installed the latest version 100.14.11 and whenever I set the Driver property to "nvidia" the system would hang with the screen off (totally black, not even a backlight).

The solution was to install the previous driver version 100.14.09 and it worked right away. A bit annoying given that I just spent hours mucking around with different settings and scanning log files.

Anyway, this leads me to think this is a regression introduced between 09 and 11.

Happy to provide error logs from the 11 version if wanted.

edit: I'm using 64bit kernel and 64bit nvidia drivers.
