Maybe you should got it, at least the first time that you got your machine setup you should installed windows xp to verify if your hardware is 100% because on Linux is much harder to troubleshoot hardware problems, Linux drivers (like nvidia e.g.) are not as good as they are on Windows.

Looking at your mobo's manual it seems that you don't need to do anything else to get hdmi audio working.

I really think that you know what you're saying, but I have to ask you. Are you sure that you unmuted the IEC958 on alsamixer? Here a picture.

Your aplay -l displays a digital audio device?
I do not have Windows on this machine. I may be able to load it at some point, but in the near future that's not really a possibility. I was hoping someone out there might have experienced similar problems and was able to get things working.

Code:
aplay -l
**** List of PLAYBACK Hardware Devices ****
card 0: M2496 [M Audio Audiophile 24/96], device 0: ICE1712 multi [ICE1712 multi]
  Subdevices: 1/1
  Subdevice #0: subdevice #0
It doesn't specifically list any digital devices but the digital output DOES work when I have it attached to a stereo device with PCM inputs (the ICE1712 chipset only shows one pcm ouput/input to alsa but does have a huge amount of other routing and mixing options available via both alsamixer and envy24control - one of which is patching the PCM output through to the SPDIF out jack). Both the sound card and graphics card are both just that, cards. The 8600gt is an MSI NX8600GT-T2D256EZ. I myself have worried that it's a hardware issue because through my testing, if it is hardware, it would have to be either the graphics card or the tv at fault. It could also be some setting in the sound card but that wouldn't be hardware. I don't have any other HDMI devices to test the tv with so I really don't know there.

The only problem that I have with hdmi audio is that my Linux didn't have the digital audio device installed, that's why I got to load a different module, then my aplay -l recognize my digital audio device, so I just unmuted and then I play an xvid, a 720p mkv file, using totem, VLC and Mplayer no config require just make sure everything is set to default in your audio device options, youtube videos, and every bit of sound came from the TV's speakers, I just had to mute the notebook's front speaker though, 'cause they play audio too.

As you can read on my post #66 my spdif seems to work when i directly sound manually using VLC, but using this method is not what you want, you want any sound file that is played to output through your TV's speakers, doesn't it?

I don't know about your sound card but in case my aplay -l showed only the analog device, after I load the right module by try and error using the list that i referred in one of my posts here, after i load the right module the digital device appear with aplay -l, I played a file and it works.

Yours sound card is not the snd-hda-intel kind of card so you have to search for another list.

Maybe you can find this link useful. They mention an M2496 device there.

OK, I've read many threads on many forums and this thread seems to be closest to figuring out HDMI audio.

I've got an EVGA e-7150/630i motherboard with onboard HDMI. The video works great, and the audio works in Windows. And yes, I've unmuted IEC958 and IEC958 Default PCM in alsamixer. Oh yeah, I'm also running dirver 177.82. My aplay -l looks like this:

Code:
user@mythbox:~$ aplay -l
**** List of PLAYBACK Hardware Devices ****
card 0: NVidia [HDA NVidia], device 0: ALC883 Analog [ALC883 Analog]
  Subdevices: 1/1
  Subdevice #0: subdevice #0
card 0: NVidia [HDA NVidia], device 1: ALC883 Digital [ALC883 Digital]
  Subdevices: 1/1
  Subdevice #0: subdevice #0
And my aplay -L:

Code:
user@mythbox:~$ aplay -L
default:CARD=NVidia
    HDA NVidia, ALC883 Analog
    Default Audio Device
front:CARD=NVidia,DEV=0
    HDA NVidia, ALC883 Analog
    Front speakers
surround40:CARD=NVidia,DEV=0
    HDA NVidia, ALC883 Analog
4.0 Surround output to Front and Rear speakers
surround41:CARD=NVidia,DEV=0
    HDA NVidia, ALC883 Analog
4.1 Surround output to Front, Rear and Subwoofer speakers
surround50:CARD=NVidia,DEV=0
    HDA NVidia, ALC883 Analog
5.0 Surround output to Front, Center and Rear speakers
surround51:CARD=NVidia,DEV=0
    HDA NVidia, ALC883 Analog
5.1 Surround output to Front, Center, Rear and Subwoofer speakers
surround71:CARD=NVidia,DEV=0
    HDA NVidia, ALC883 Analog
7.1 Surround output to Front, Center, Side, Rear and Woofer speakers
iec958:CARD=NVidia,DEV=0
    HDA NVidia, ALC883 Digital
    IEC958 (S/PDIF) Digital Audio Output
hdmi:CARD=NVidia,DEV=0
    HDA NVidia
    HDMI Audio Output
null
Discard all samples (playback) or generate zero samples (capture)
default:CARD=SAA7134
    SAA7134, SAA7134 PCM
    Default Audio Device
but when I try something like
Code:
aplay -D hdmi:CARD=NVidia,DEV=0 file.wav
I get an error saying "aplay: main:583: audio open error: No such file or directory".

If i try
Code:
aplay -D iec958:CARD=NVidia,DEV=0 file.wav
I get no error, but I also don't hear anything. I assume because this is being played to the optical/analog digital ports.

I've edited /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base by adding
Code:
options snd-hda-intel model=3stack-dig
to no avail.

I'm pretty much stuck here. Any other suggestions?

I have mobo Asus M3N78-EM with integrated HDMI output. I also cannot pass audio over HDMI. Moreover, in the aplay -L output I don't see any digital audio info:
Code:
front:CARD=NVidia,DEV=0
    HDA NVidia, ALC883 Analog
    Front speakers
surround40:CARD=NVidia,DEV=0
    HDA NVidia, ALC883 Analog
4.0 Surround output to Front and Rear speakers
surround41:CARD=NVidia,DEV=0
    HDA NVidia, ALC883 Analog
4.1 Surround output to Front, Rear and Subwoofer speakers
surround50:CARD=NVidia,DEV=0
    HDA NVidia, ALC883 Analog
5.0 Surround output to Front, Center and Rear speakers
surround51:CARD=NVidia,DEV=0
    HDA NVidia, ALC883 Analog
5.1 Surround output to Front, Center, Rear and Subwoofer speakers
surround71:CARD=NVidia,DEV=0
    HDA NVidia, ALC883 Analog
7.1 Surround output to Front, Center, Side, Rear and Woofer speakers
null
Discard all samples (playback) or generate zero samples (capture)
I run Kubuntu 7.10 with the latest nVidia drivers 177.82. The HDMI mode for sound is activated in the BIOS.

Any idea how to get it working?

TIA

You should update to alsa 1.0.18

Aplay -l should list the hdmi device also.
Code:
jukka@bogey:/proc$ aplay -l
**** List of PLAYBACK Hardware Devices ****
card 0: NVidia [HDA NVidia], device 0: ALC883 Analog [ALC883 Analog]
  Subdevices: 1/1
  Subdevice #0: subdevice #0
card 0: NVidia [HDA NVidia], device 1: ALC883 Digital [ALC883 Digital]
  Subdevices: 1/1
  Subdevice #0: subdevice #0
card 0: NVidia [HDA NVidia], device 3: NVIDIA HDMI [NVIDIA HDMI]
  Subdevices: 1/1
  Subdevice #0: subdevice #0
