Default Audio through hdmi

I have a Asus P5N-E SLI mainboard
(http://www.asus.com/products4.aspx?m...3&l2=11&l3=473)

and a MSI GeForce 7300GS with hdmi-out (http://www.msicomputer.com/product/p...56EH&class=vga)

I have connected the cable from spdif-out on the mainboard to the spdif-in on the gfx-card, but I still get no sound via the hdmi cable.

The sound is working fine through the analog output of the mainboard though.

Do I need to do some software hacking to get both audio/video through the hdmi?

I don't really see the point of buying a card with HDMI in the first place. You can just easily get an adapter which does DVI + digital audio on one end and HDMI on the other end and then you still have a regular DVI port. Also I think you might lose out on the port being dual-link DVI if it is just HDMI as well (not sure on this though).

Phoronix says about special patch for ALSA to activate HDMI audio on Radeon HD 2k:

HDMI port and IHDA codec are standard devices. Maybe it will work for Nvidia too. On the picture below ATI there is Nvidia so it looks supported.

Really? it appears to be in it's infancy, granted, but I haven't seen any reports saying it not supported at all..

Which leads me nicely onto my question

I've just build a HTPC with an AN-M2HD mobo - I can get audio to work happily under windows / vista, but with no luck under ubuntu. I can see patches in alsa for HDMI audio on other hardware, but nothing for the above mobo (which, from memory has the nForce 630a chipset on board)
Anyone got any pointers?

Thanks!

Is it still the case? Sorry, I couldn't find anything about this in the docs. I'm running the latest 100.14.19 driver for my 8600GT-based card and I get no sound over HDMI. Is there a way to get it fixed, or should I just forget about it?

This status has not changed. At some undetermined point in the future HDMI audio support may be supported.

I've got the same mobo just yesterday! I'm just experimenting with it...

Hi,

Any idea where one could buy such an adapter and what's the adapter called?

Yeah I bought the same video card under the impression that I could pass audio through my HDMI. As a horrible hack I've been having to run a 1/8th" stereo cable out to my TV along with the HDMI.
