It is curious for that the mode DX 10 of Crysis has not been functional until a few days ago
You need only go over some of the interviews with the Crytek devs to find this out yourself.

They said numerous times that DX9 MP will not contain destructable environments, DX10 will. DX10 players can play on DX9 servers, DX9 players cannot play on DX10 servers.

Community: Will clients with DirectX 10 be able to play on servers with DirectX 9?

Bernd: That's something which can be set as server-option. You'll be able to say that only DirectX 10 is allowed or only DirectX 9 or both are allowed. We have, e.g. features like "battle-dust" which only runs on DirectX 10. This would lead to cheat accusations on a server which allows both.
Also... Crytek has said numerous times that it is highly likely that DX9 MP will not include the same level of physics as DX9/DX10 single player.

Part 3: To start, in the news preceding reporting our days with the ESWC, we had specified you that during the creation of a server, in the multiplayer options were an option to activate DirectX 10 followed of a check box to activate the evolution of time in a real way still followed option to activate the "Battledust". After having informed itself at Eric Lagel, we were pleased to learn that Battledust is an option allowing activation or not effect of dust at the time of the battles. At the time of large battles as a multiplayer mode, clouds of dust are formed because of the shootings of the balls and the steps on the ground, and remain outstanding in the air. This box will thus make it possible to activate it on the server.

1. There is no terrain deformation, not even in Direct X 10.

2. Grass does not bend when you walk on or lay down in it; foliage just moves as you walk through it. The only foliage that truly bends against your model is the larger leaves .. all other just has a "shake" animation when you go through it I believe.
