Default [XOrg "nv"] Can't get the nv-driver to work on my 6100

Hi,

I am running XOrg Server 1.3.0, which works well with "vesa" drivers. The same xorg.conf changed to use "nv" driver produces only some colored lines on a mostly black screen. Exiting with Ctrl+Alt+Backspace exits, but even the terminal is broken afterwards (colors are correct, but all letters/numbers are reduced to lines).

Any ideas what is wrong with my config? X.org wiki and google had no useable info so far. Any hints where I should look?

Config details below

Cheers

Kai

PS: I hope you deal with the open source drivers too. I have no interest in running the nvidia binary ones

I am using xf86-video-nv 2.1.2 and a kernel compiled with the following options:

CONFIG_FB_NVIDIA=y
CONFIG_FB_NVIDIA_I2C=y
CONFIG_FB_NVIDIA_DEBUG=y
CONFIG_FB_NVIDIA_BACKLIGHT=y
CONFIG_FB_RIVA=y
CONFIG_FB_RIVA_I2C=y

Try configuring your kernel without nvidia-specific FB console support (CONFIG_FB_NVIDIA=n and CONFIG_FB_RIVA=n).

Using these drivers in conjuction with the nvidia-specific drivers for X (nv or nvidia) is asking for trouble as you have 2 drivers controlling the same hardware that don't communicate with each other.

According to this tutorial I need at least one of the two FB_Driver (as interface between kernel and nv I guess) http://gentoo-wiki.com/TIP_Switching..._nVidia_driver

However I got your idea and deleted at least the riva one. Same result. I also tried the xorg.conf generated (and working) by Knoppix. Same result again. Pixel mess on the screen.

I wonder whats wrong. "nvidia" (with another kernel, of course) and "vesa" work like a charm...

Any other ideas?

That wiki is incorrect. The xf86-video-nv driver does not require a kernel module, and in fact, the use of rivafb and nvidiafb in conjunction with xf86-video-nv is not supported and not expected to work. You should use a standard VGA console or vesafb.

Hi Aaron,

thanks for pointing out that the wiki is wrong!

I recompiled the kernel using:
CONFIG_FB_VESA=m
CONFIG_FB_VESA_STD=y
CONFIG_VIDEO_SELECT=y
# CONFIG_FB_NVIDIA is not set
# CONFIG_FB_RIVA is not set

The pixel mess looks different now. And I got an intact mouse pointer.

I think my installation is messed up. I will have to reinstall Gentoo, I guess.

So to use "nv" I just have to
1. get the xf86-video-nv drivers
2. compile a kernel with "vesafb" only and (module or fixed?)
3. use the same xorg.conf, as with the "vesa".

Is that correct or are there other dependencies?

Buona notte!
