Default compiz not working here

Hello. I have an updated Ubuntu Gutsy install here with long-time nvidia usage. I am using the 100.14.19 linux driver and all works fine outside of compiz. 3D applications work as expected.

I start up the beryl-manager and have configured compiz to only use the 3D cube. I switch to the compiz window manager from the beryl-manager and the following output is displayed to the console started beryl-manager:

Checking for Xgl: not present.
Detected PCI ID for VGA: 04:02.0 0300: 10de:0322 (rev a1) (prog-if 00 [VGA])
Checking for texture_from_pixmap: present.
Checking for non power of two support: present.
Checking for Composite extension: present.
Comparing resolution (1600x1200) to maximum 3D texture size (4096): Passed.
Checking for nVidia: present.
Checking for FBConfig: present.
Checking for Xgl: not present.
Starting emerald
/usr/bin/compiz.real (core) - Error: Another window manager is already running on screen: 0
/usr/bin/compiz.real (core) - Fatal: No manageable screens found on display :0
Not initializing the Gtk-Qt theme engine

My nvidia card is a pci slot (not agp) and output from lspci shows

nVidia Corporation NV34 [GeForce FX 5200] (rev a1)

Compiz runs without crashing, but all I get when I use ctrl-alt + arrows is a map of the virtual windows (no cube).

I suspect the card is too old or the pci slot makes it too slow.

Any help appreciated.

This has nothing to do with your graphics card. Please read the error messages you posted:

/usr/bin/compiz.real (core) - Error: Another window manager is already running on screen: 0
/usr/bin/compiz.real (core) - Fatal: No manageable screens found on display :0

No other errors are mentioned. No mention of graphics card or driver problems. It sounds like the only real problem you have is a compiz configuration one. If you're using modern builds of compiz, beryl-manager probably won't work right.

Thanks for responding.

I suspected as such, but apparently do not know how to actually startup compiz . I was starting from within a kde session (konsole window actually).

I assume compiz is supposed to be used in place of

exec startkde

for example in the xinit method of starting X ?
