Default Great Space Combat Game?

Looking for some awesome space sim/space combat oriented games. Kind of been craving some deep space destruction lately but as I've never really been into this type of game before, I'm having a hard time trying to track down games worth a damn.

Anyone have anything in mind?

Sweet. I've been looking at Freelancer lately but I read something about the combat and movement being point and click? Which caught me off guard, but everything else I've read about it has been good. I'll be picking it up the next time I see it at a bargain bin.

Freespace 2 with Open Source project installed to update the game with modern graphics. 'Nuff said.

First Strike Mod for Battlefield 2142 if you have that game. Its great...both space combat aka Death Star trench and dogfighting as well as infantry combat. Very polished compared to most mods too!

Freelancer is a good space sim, but a little light. If you want a real space sim you can't go wrong with Freespace 2.

I like X3 Reunion, takes a very long time to get somewere in the economics, but once you have your trade fleet up and running it wont take long till you can build your own space stations and produce stuff your self, while youre out fighting pirates and stuff ... or raid your self

Very grand scale game id say.

I know there was an expansion in the works for X3 too, might even be out but ive not checked it out yet.

Freelancer was fun too, but way to restrictive when you do the campain, not like X2 / X3

JumpGate, uses a flight engine that is very kewl once you get the hang of it.

Played it for years after beta testing it and now they are upgrading or have upgraded the entire game engine, you can sign up for the beta test now, but the original version is still available to play.
