I can't get to the site...just for clarification, you're talking about backwards compatibility with PS2 titles, right?

yeah
ill post a copy and paste

Sony has announced that the 40GB version of the PS3 will enter the European market on Oct. 10th, for a price of €399 ($565). The unit sports only two USB ports (instead of four) and does not include the multi-memory ports. And, in a move we absolutely cannot understand, the new model is not backwards compatible with PS2 discs. Seriously.

Since BC is handled by software emulation (in the 80GB model), why is it gone from the 40-gigger? It's not that DVD support has been removed from the Blu-ray drive, as Sony continues to hype DVD movie upscaling. But the official line is, "the new model is no longer backwards compatible with PlayStation 2 titles, reflecting both the reduced emphasis placed on this feature amongst later purchasers of PS3, as well as the availability of a more extensive line-up of PS3 specific titles." Extensive? Don't even get us started...

If BC's on your checklist, you best scoop up a Starter Pack (now €499) "while stocks last."

Enter the guys that scream the 360 isn't 100% backwards compatible.
MS never said it would be.

Sony was declaring from day 1 it would be fully backwards compatible.

What's next? Sony declaring that the BD drives aren't 2.0 compatible either.

Srsly, Fuk a Sny.

I will only ever buy a PS3 if its PS2 compatible, and $400, tops. It's looking like I may never buy a PS3. I must be critically misinformed anyhow because I was under the impression that newer PS3s had PS2 emulation done completely in software. So how can they possibly make a PS3 that does not support backwards compatibility?

The system is $399. That trumps having PS2 backwards compatibility by a wide margin. Wasn't the talk around here that BC didn't matter in the case of the 360. That was the opinion of many. It shouldn't matter here either.

It was never a selling point of the 360 as it was with the PS3.

I guess a cheap(er) system without BC is OK since they have that extensive library and all.

The current 60gb models in UK and 80gb models everywhere else have a software emulator for the EE in PS2. The GS chip is still in there. If they go to a 100% emulation software then it shouldn't really be a problem for the 40gb model.

With the current lack of good PS3 titles I think removing PS1/2 game compatibility is a BAD idea. Isn't BW compatibility a software based solution now? Why would Sony intentionally remove a software solution from the 40GB model?? I'm having a hard time understanding this.

Edit: It seems that Marvel_us just answered my question. It's not a 100% software solution.

Maybe if the tards at Sony quit making PS2s then they could afford to make a PS3 that lived up to all their hype.

Eh, I don't see what the real problem is. If people don't like it then don't buy it. The PS3 has some great looking titles due out this month through the end of the year as well.

Also, it seems that this PS3 may have 65nm chips since the mock up pic doesn't have the side vents and the new power supply specs have gone down in amperage.

EDIT: Pics...

Why am I not believing this? I don't think Sony is this stupid. Not to say I don't think they are stupid. I just don't think they are THIS stupid.

With the public eye seeing the Xbox360 fall into pieces from overheating, now is Sony's time to SHINE. Sony needs to promote a positive image. Thats the only way they will have a chance against the 360. This is their own chance at finally turning this system into something decent and if this is true, then they just blew it.
