Default Re: 40GB PS3 - NO BACKWARDS COMPATIBILITY

Even though my roommate already has a PS3, I gotta say that even if I was in the market to buy one - I wouldn't care. I never really go back and play that many older games anyway. There's so many new games coming out that it wouldn't even occur to me to go back and play last-gen games.

There are still many new games released for PS2.
Solution: Drop PS2 support like yesterdays news.

I don't see how they can push the PS3 as they are still heavily developing, supporting, and selling NEW PS2s.

They aren't dropping it. If someone really wants to play PS2 games that badly then either A) buy a PS2 or B) buy a PS3 sku that has BC compatibility.

My money is on Sony eventually fully dropping all BC.

Removing BC means saving a few extra chips. In order to sell at €400 Sony had to cut down the costs whenever possible.

I'm surprised they maintained BluRay playback capabilities (not the blue laser drive, only the playback software) as this means paying some royalties for the codecs used. Same for the WiFi. Sony could have saved more and probably still maintain the GS chip, which, by now, should be very easy to manufacture at 90nm. I don't know about the US market, but BC here in Italy means a lot to gamers, while very few are interested in high def movies.

This new revision of the PS3 probably also needs a different motherboard (I'm eager to see some PSŁ pr0n as soon as some skilled individual puts his hand on the new sku) complicating the logistics and working against any possible cost reduction stemming from higher volume mass production.

Also, it seems that this PS3 may have 65nm chips since the mock up pic doesn't have the side vents and the new power supply specs have gone down in amperage.

EDIT: Pics...

Sony goes through the trouble of finally getting PS1/2 games to upscale beautifully on the PS3 then they completely remove BC on their newest sku. It doesn't matter how anyone tries to spin this... it's a BAD move all around. IMO the majority of people even interested in purchasing a PS3 are PS2 owners.

All you Sony fanboys can spin it all you want. It IS retarded to remove BC.

Nobody wants to keep their old system around to play certain games, especially when Sony promised support.

What you are saying is, people should keep their old PC to play older games when they upgrade instead of expecting the new PC to able to play them. What if Microsoft come out next and said the new DX11 won't be able to play any games from DX10 or before? It would be called "pulling a Sony."

I even think it was a stupid move removing BC from the systems... I use mine often, its great playing PS2 titles at 1080p. One thing I don't understand is why it lacks BC, all the newest models of the PS3 use software emulation rather then hardware emulation. I can see the issue in Europe considering that even with hardware emulation they had compatiblity issue but if this is brought to the USA without BC it would be weird... theres no reason for such a change.

No one but Nv40 could defend such a retarded move...
