Default Re: 40GB PS3 - NO BACKWARDS COMPATIBILITY

Today I was in a shopping mall and there was a huge pile of 40 GB PS3s at 399€. The price, which was well adsvertised by colorful posters draw a lot of attention. I stopped to watch the people reaction.

In the meantime, I two guys near me were talking with a clerk about the new PS3: upon discovering that it wasn't backward compatible with PS2 games, they made a disgusted comment and turned the other way around. I wonder how many more won't purchase a PS3 yet, because the lack of BC

On a side node, the regular Xbox 360 + Halo is selling here at 329€

There are supposed to be instructions for replacing the hard drive in the manual. However, I don't own a PS3, and thus do not have a manual to check.

I think BC is not the importend especially with >100mln users with PS2> Firstly BC is not perfect anymore with 80GB model and never was with european model. What's more I assume SONY has some statistics of how many users uses PS3 for PS2 games after all PS3 can be connected to Internet. I think Sony should lower PS2 price I think it's better to use PS2 for PS2 games as you have perfect compatability and it consumes much less energy.

Same. I heard 4 people talking about lack of bc in my local gamestore too yesterday. They all went away very frustrated and stated that they hated Sony for doing this to them.

let me put it this way. The only reason I'd ever buy a PS3 is if it had backwards compatibility.

Looks like you will not be getting a "new" one then, Sony is phasing all the BC models out.

Just in case you didn't know (maybe you are taking about the Japanese & North American version of the 60GB).
The PAL 60GB and the 80GB PS3's do not have the Emotion Engine (CPU), but they have the Graphics Synthesizer (GPU).
Since the GS is missing in the new 40GB models = no backwards compatibility.

aha!

Maybe thats it ^^

Maybe this campaign is to promote loyalty amongst people who HAVE brought one already. It is giving people reason to promote THEIR PS3.

Morale has been low in the "already purchased" department and this could raise the value in their eyes.

Could be wrong though

Hey sony recruiters......

"In the week that SCE UK introduced the new SKU at 299 and revealed that the 60GB console is to be phased out"

Sure you can simply say that this only relates to the UK, but can you buy units with full BC still in the USA?
